Why Backlinks Are Crucial To Rank In The SERP’s
In the sometimes confusing world of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) it may seem daunting to get backlinks, you’ve just launched your new Blog/Website and wondered “why am i not getting any or more visitors?” Even more so if you are completely new to the world of Internet Marketing (IM) or have just launched your first website, you may not realize exactly what backlinks are or even how crucial they are if you are trying for extremely high Search Engine rankings on Google,Yahoo or Bing.
In brief, a backlink is a hyperlink (a link that can be clicked on) on a site somewhere else on the web that links back to your website. In its least complicated crudest form, that is a backlink.
If you are using any of the PPC advertising methods like Goggle Adwords, AdBrite or Yahoo’s paid ads to “get backlinks to your site”, then quality backlinks are something that you do not need to be concerned about.
So for the sake of this article, let’s assume that you are going to be relying on decent organic traffic and therefore rankings in Google (they are the free ones) and you need to get your site high up on Page 1 of Google – preferably #1 – but you don’t understand this SEO business or using backlinks and you can’t yet afford to pay someone to optimize your site/blog for you.
Unlike Bing and Yahoo which are more driven by factors on your site (though together they hold less than 25% of the search engine market), Google uses backlinks (on other sites) to figure out if your new site on, say, dog training, should rank highly on their search engine results or not.
Google will look at the so-called anchor text in the link (the word or phrase that is linked) and the authority of the blog that the link is coming from to establish how highly or lowly your website/blog should rank. And when it comes to Google organic search engine results, inbound links are pretty much the main factor that affect how your site ranks in the SERP’s (search engine results pages).
Your next question should therefore be, how to get backlinks to your example: dog training site? Back in the prehistoric era of the Internet, you would approach other webmasters and politely ask for a link on their website and in return you would offer one on your site to theirs.
However in today’s SEO world that method is not effective any longer.
- Google hates what it defines as reciprocal backlinks (and Google will penalize your site) where sites link to each other, so those links will have virtually no benefit or link juice.
- You now require a large volume of relevant links if your chosen keyword has a high level of competition as most sites on Page one of Google will usually have a substantial amount of links (think in the hundreds and thousands).
There are some other factors to take into account such as whether the links are dofollow or nofollow, the Pagerank of the site where you get backlinks from and having backlinks from a big variety of sites. Contrary to what other “SEO Gurus” are saying, I have have found the relevancy of a backlink to your site does play a factor in gaining linking power, but that the consistency of building backlinks is also very important.
